Pool Myths Busted:
Separating Fact from Fiction

Pooly myths busted
June 10, 2025

Summer is here, and that means one glorious thing: POOL TIME! Whether you’re perfecting your freestyle in our awesome indoor pool at The Swim Advantage in Orland Park or hitting up your local outdoor oasis, you’ve probably heard a few things about pools over the years. Some are helpful, some are hilarious, and some are just plain wrong.

Think of us as your friendly neighborhood pool myth-busters (though full disclosure: I never actually watched the show “MythBusters,” but I heard the hosts secretly couldn’t stand each other in real life… just a random tidbit for ya!). Today, we’re diving deep to separate the chlorine-infused fact from the murky fiction. Let’s make sure your pool knowledge is crystal clear!

Myth #1: “If you pee in the pool, it turns a special color.”

BUSTED! Okay, let’s just get this one out of the way. No, pools do not have a magical dye that exposes secret swimmers who relieve themselves in the water. However (and this is a BIG however!), that doesn’t make it okay! Urine introduces nitrogen compounds that react with chlorine to form chloramines. These are what cause that “chlorine smell” (it’s not actually the chlorine itself!) and can irritate your eyes and lungs. So, while there’s no tell-tale color, let’s all do our part to keep the water clean and head to the restroom.

Myth #2: “You have to wait a full hour after eating before swimming, or you’ll get terrible cramps and drown!”

PLAUSIBLE (But Mostly BUSTED): This one has been around for ages, often instilled by well-meaning (but perhaps misinformed) adults. The idea is that digestion diverts blood flow from your muscles, increasing the risk of cramps. While vigorous activity immediately after a huge meal could theoretically cause some mild discomfort, there’s little scientific evidence to support the “wait an hour or you’ll drown” part. Use common sense – avoid swimming intensely right after a massive feast – but don’t let this myth keep you sidelined unnecessarily, especially for light swimming or play.

Myth #3: “More chlorine means a cleaner pool.”

BUSTED! Actually, too much chlorine can be just as problematic as too little. Over-chlorination can lead to skin and eye irritation, a strong chemical odor, and even damage pool equipment. Pool maintenance is all about balance. Properly maintained pools have the right chemical levels to sanitize effectively without being harsh. That’s why regular testing and balanced chemical additions are key – something our awesome team at The Swim Advantage understands inside and out!

Myth #4: “If you can hold your breath for a long time out of the water, you can do the same in the water.”

BUSTED! Holding your breath out of the water and underwater are two very different things. Underwater breath-holding involves the mammalian dive reflex, which slows your heart rate and conserves oxygen. However, pushing your breath-holding limits underwater is incredibly dangerous and can lead to shallow water blackout. This is a serious risk and should never be practiced without expert supervision (which we address safely in advanced swim training, focusing on proper technique and safety protocols, never prolonged breath-holding contests).

Myth #5: “All public pools have the same level of cleanliness.”

BUSTED! Just like any business or facility, cleanliness standards can vary. Well-maintained pools follow strict regulations for water chemistry, filtration, and hygiene. Look for signs of good maintenance (clear water, clean decks, functioning equipment) and don’t hesitate to voice concerns if you see something amiss. We take pool hygiene incredibly seriously at The Swim Advantage, ensuring a healthy and enjoyable environment for everyone.

Myth #6: “Babies are natural swimmers.”

PARTIALLY TRUE (But Requires Major Caveats): While babies have some innate reflexes that make them appear comfortable in water initially (like the diving reflex), these disappear as they grow. Babies are not naturally safe in water and require constant, active supervision. Infant swim programs focus on water acclimation and basic skills, but they are not a substitute for adult supervision.

Myth #7: “Sunscreen washes off instantly in the pool, so there’s no point in wearing it.”

BUSTED! While some sunscreen does wash off, especially after vigorous activity, it’s still crucial to apply a water-resistant sunscreen before heading to the pool. Reapply frequently, especially after swimming and towel drying. Sunburn is no fun and significantly increases your risk of skin cancer. Protect that precious skin!

The Truth? Knowledge is Your Best Poolside Accessory!

Knowing the facts helps you make smart choices for a safer and more enjoyable time in the water. Don’t let silly myths cloud your pool days! And remember, whether you’re working on your butterfly or just enjoying a leisurely float, The Swim Advantage in Orland Park is committed to providing a clean, safe, and fun environment to learn and love to swim.

Now go forth, armed with the truth, and enjoy those glorious pool days! Just remember to use the restroom, reapply your sunscreen, and maybe avoid any intense sprints right after that giant hot dog. Happy swimming!

Open Water Warrior:
Tips for Your First Outdoor Swim

open water warrior
June 3, 2025

You’ve done it. You’ve conquered the kick drills, mastered the breathing, and found your rhythm between those comforting blue lines at The Swim Advantage pool. You feel strong, confident, and capable in the water. But now, as summer paints the Midwest in vibrant greens and blues, another call echoes – the call of the open water.

Maybe it’s a sparkling local lake or a gentle stretch of river. The idea is thrilling, right? And maybe… just maybe… a tiny bit terrifying?

Deep breaths, swimmer! Transitioning from the pool to open water is a huge, exciting step, and it’s totally normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. The pool is your trusted training ground; open water is your grand adventure. Think of yourself as a budding “Open Water Warrior” – strong, prepared, and ready to explore. We’re here to be your guide, offering tips and support as you embark on this awesome new chapter.

What’s the Big Difference? (Spoiler: It’s Mostly in Your Head!)

Okay, it’s not all in your head, but a lot of the challenge is mental. Here’s what makes open water unique, and why it’s nothing to fear, only to respect and prepare for:

  • The “Can’t See the Bottom” Conundrum: Midwest waters often mean lower visibility. It can feel weird not seeing those lines or walls. That’s okay! It’s about trusting your stroke and learning new ways to navigate.
  • Mother Nature’s Thermostat: Forget our cozy heated pool! Water temps can vary wildly. It might be cooler than you expect, and that’s a key factor in how long you swim.
  • No Walls, No Lines, No Problem? Navigating without visual aids requires a new skill: sighting. And you won’t have a wall to push off or hang onto every 25 yards. (Don’t worry, we have solutions!)
  • You’re Not Alone (Literally): Yes, there might be some friendly fish or swaying weeds. They’re part of the experience and almost always harmless! You might also encounter waves (even small ones) or a gentle current.
  • The Vastness Factor: It can feel immense out there. The key is to build your confidence gradually and always swim safely.

Gearing Up Your Inner Warrior: Your Open Water Toolkit

Preparation is power! Having the right gear and mindset makes all the difference.

Essential Gear:

  1. Be Bold & Bright: A BRIGHTLY-COLOURED SWIM CAP (think neon pink, orange, or yellow) is non-negotiable. This is your #1 visibility tool. Boats, paddleboarders, and your swim buddy need to see you!
  2. See Clearly Now: Good goggles are essential. Consider a pair with tinted or polarized lenses for sunny days – they cut glare significantly.
  3. The Safety Snuggie (Wetsuit): Especially for early swims or if you get cold easily, a wetsuit provides vital warmth and a welcome boost of buoyancy, which can be a huge confidence-builder.
  4. Your Floating BFF (Tow Float): We highly recommend a tow float or swim buoy. This brightly coloured, inflatable buoy clips around your waist and floats behind you. It makes you super visible and acts as a float you can rest on if you get tired or crampy.

Essential Mindset & Safety Plan:

  1. NEVER SWIM ALONE: This is the golden rule. Always swim with a buddy, a group, or have someone dedicated to watching you from shore or a kayak.
  2. Know Before You Go: Research your spot. Where are the safe entry/exit points? Are there boat channels? Known hazards? Water quality alerts?
  3. Weather Wizardry: Check the forecast and the water temperature. Be aware that Midwest weather can shift quickly. If thunder roars, go indoors!
  4. File a “Swim Plan”: Tell someone reliable where you’re going, your route, and when you expect to be back.
  5. Start Small, Win Big: Don’t try to cross the lake on day one. Begin in shallow water, practice breathing, and try swimming just a short distance parallel to the shore. Build up time and distance gradually.
  6. Learn to “Sight”: This is how you navigate. Practice lifting your goggles just above the water every few strokes to spot a landmark (a big tree, a house, etc.) in the direction you want to go. Aim for quick peeks!
  7. Breathe Easy: Nerves can make breathing shallow. Focus on long, steady exhales. If you feel panicked, stop. Roll onto your back, breathe deeply, hold onto your tow float, signal your buddy. It’s okay.
  8. Listen Up! (To Your Body): Feeling overly tired or cold? Head back in. There’s no award for pushing past your limits unsafely. Every swim is a learning experience.

Your Home Port: The Swim Advantage is Always Here!

Embarking on your open water journey doesn’t mean leaving your pool days behind. Think of The Swim Advantage as your essential base camp and training hub!

  • Your Foundation: The skills, endurance, and confidence you build in our indoor heated pool in Orland Park are the bedrock of your open water success.
  • Expert Advice: Talk to your amazing instructors! They can offer specific drills to help with sighting, bilateral breathing (breathing on both sides – super helpful in open water!), and endurance.
  • A Safe Haven: Our pool is always here for you – a predictable, safe, and friendly environment to refine your technique, push your limits, or just enjoy a relaxing swim, no matter the weather outside.

Becoming an Open Water Warrior is a journey, not a race. It’s about embracing a new challenge, respecting nature, and discovering a whole new level of freedom and accomplishment in the water. Be patient with yourself, celebrate every small victory, and swim safely.

You’ve trained for this. You’re ready. You’ve got this! And we, your Swim Advantage family, are cheering you on every stroke of the way.

Summer Splashdown!
Your Guide to Midwest Water Safety

Summer Splashdown Blog
May 27, 2025

School’s out, the sun’s high, and the siren song of pools, lakes, and waterparks is strong. YES! Summer is officially here, and we are ready for cannonballs and lazy river floats. But before your crew launches into full summer vacation mode, let’s talk real water safety. Not the boring, “yeah-yeah-I-know” stuff, but the nitty-gritty tips that make a difference here in our beautiful (and water-filled!) Midwest. Let’s make this the most fun and safest summer yet!

The “Always On” Water Safety Rules (The Non-Negotiables)

These are your base layers – wear them everywhere, every time.

  1. The “Velcro Parent” Rule (aka Active Supervision): This isn’t just glancing up from your book. It means constant, undistracted visual contact. For toddlers and non-swimmers, it means “touch supervision” – being close enough to reach out and grab them instantly. No phones, no deep chats, just eyes on the kids. Appoint a “Water Watcher” and rotate every 15-20 minutes so everyone stays fresh.
  2. Know How to Swim (Seriously!): This is the single most important layer of protection. Formal swim lessons, like those at The Swim Advantage, reduce the risk of drowning. It’s an investment in a lifetime of safer fun.
  3. Life Jackets Aren’t Pool Toys (and Vice Versa): Forget the inflatable water wings. For boats, lakes, rivers, and even pools if needed, use only U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Check the fit – it should be snug, not ride up over the chin or ears.
  4. Know CPR: In an emergency, seconds count. Knowing CPR can literally be a lifesaver while waiting for first responders. Look for local classes!
  5. Set the Rules Before You Get Wet: Don’t wait until the kids are mid-cannonball. Discuss rules like “no running,” “ask before entering,” and “stay with your buddy” before you even leave the house or hit the water’s edge.

Pool Safety: Beyond the Backyard Gate

Whether it’s your neighbor’s pool or the community hotspot (like our awesome indoor pool in Orland Park!), pools have specific needs.

  • Home Pool Fortress: If you have a pool, think like a security expert. You need a four-sided fence at least 4 feet high with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Pool alarms on doors leading outside and/or in-pool motion sensors add crucial layers.
  • The Drain Drain-a: Teach kids to stay away from drains and suction fittings. Ensure your home pool drains have compliant covers.
  • Toy Story – The End: Remove all toys from the pool after swimming. A floating toy can tempt a child back to the water’s edge unattended.
  • Public Pool Plan: Designate a super-obvious meeting spot immediately upon arrival. Lifeguards are amazing, but they are not your personal babysitter. Implement a buddy system, even for older kids.
  • Hot Foot/Slippery When Wet: Pool decks get scorching and slick. Water shoes can be a foot-saver (and a fall-preventer).

Waterpark Wonders: Navigating the Thrills

Waterparks are awesome chaos! Keep it fun with these tips:

  • Honesty is the Best Policy: Always follow the height, weight, and age restrictions for slides and rides. They exist for a reason. Don’t try to sneak a child on.
  • Ride Recon: If possible, watch a ride cycle through before your child gets on so they (and you) know what to expect.
  • Buddy Up & Base Camp: The buddy system and a designated meeting spot are NON-NEGOTIABLE here. Set check-in times.
  • Wave Pool Wisdom: Treat wave pools like the ocean (minus the sharks). Even strong swimmers can get tired or overwhelmed. Consider a life jacket here.
  • Hydration Station: It’s easy to forget to drink water when you’re surrounded by it. Set reminders and take breaks in the shade.

Lake Life: Midwest Must-Knows

Our beautiful lakes offer unique challenges.

  • The Murky Mystery: Midwest lakes often have limited visibility. You can’t always see the bottom, drop-offs, weeds, or hidden rocks. Teach kids to always enter the water feet first (no diving in unknown areas!).
  • Weather Watch: Lake weather can turn on a dime. Keep an eye on the sky and get out of the water immediately if you hear thunder or see lightning.
  • Boat Brains: Be aware of boat traffic, even in designated swim areas. Wear bright colours so boaters can see you.
  • Dock Dangers: Docks can be slippery, and the water around them can be deceptively deep. No running, and life jackets for non-swimmers near the edge are a must.
  • Temperature Tantrums: Even on hot days, lake water (especially deeper down) can be surprisingly cold and lead to muscle cramps or cold shock. Ease in.

River Rules: Respect the Flow

Rivers are dynamic and demand respect.

  • Current Cues: Rivers always have a current, even if they look calm. Understand its strength and direction before getting in. Teach kids that if they get caught in a current, they shouldn’t fight it – float on their back and angle towards the shore downstream.
  • Beware the Bends & Banks: Debris (logs, branches) often collects on river bends and near banks. Slippery, uneven bottoms are the norm. River shoes are your friends!
  • Dam Dangers: Low-head dams are extremely dangerous “drowning machines.” Know where they are and stay far away, both upstream and downstream.
  • Feet First, Always: Just like lakes, you don’t know what’s below. Never dive into a river.

Make This Summer Your Safest!

Wow, that seems like a lot, but a little prep goes a long way in keeping summer fun and worry-free. Share these tips with friends and family! And remember, the very best safety tool is confidence and competence in the water.

That’s where The Swim Advantage in Orland Park comes in. Our amazing instructors and cozy indoor heated pool provide the perfect, encouraging environment for kids to learn the skills they need to navigate all these water scenarios safely.

Tips For Helping Your Child Overcome a Fear of Water

fear of water
May 19, 2025

Alright, let’s talk about that little human in your life. Does the thought of a swimming pool transform them into a mini-CEO of “Nopeville,” population: them? Do they treat the water’s edge like it’s a lava flow, or maybe just give the deep end a suspicious side-eye usually reserved for broccoli? If you’re chuckling (or sighing deeply) in recognition, you might just be parenting a delightful “couch captain” – a kiddo who’s infinitely more comfortable navigating the sofa seas than actual H2O.

First things first, take a big, calming breath, grown-ups. It’s super common for kids to have reservations, or even outright fear, about the water. What looks like a shimmering invitation to fun for us can feel like a giant, mysterious, and wobbly world to a child. Getting to the heart of why your little one is channeling their inner landlubber is the first step to gently charting a course towards water confidence.

Why Your Little Matey Might Prefer Dry Land:

So, what’s anchoring this reluctance? There’s a whole treasure chest of reasons:

  • The Great Unknown Waters: Let’s face it, water is a sensory party! The feeling of being buoyant (what IS this floaty magic?!), water tickling their ears, or how everything sounds a bit like a friendly whale underwater – it can be a lot for a little system to process.
  • Sensory Surprises: Some kiddos are like finely tuned instruments. The water temp being “a bit brisk,” the unique aroma of chlorine, or the happy (but loud!) echoes of a pool can be more jarring than joyful.
  • That One Time When…: Even a seemingly tiny splash-cident – an unexpected faceful of water, a surprise dunk from an enthusiastic sibling, or a slippery moment near the tub – can plant a seed of caution that blossoms into full-blown “no thanks!”
  • Reading the Room (That’s You!): Our kids are emotional sponges. If you’re secretly (or not-so-secretly) a tad anxious about water safety, they’ll likely tune into that frequency.
  • The Imagination Station is Working Overtime: To a child, the deep end isn’t just blue tiles; it’s a potential kraken habitat! Their vivid imaginations can sometimes work against them here.

Gentle Tides of Change: Tips to Nudge Your Kiddo Towards the Water

Patience, positivity, and a playful spirit are your trusty crew for this voyage. Think less “pirate plank” and more “gentle invitation to a really cool water parade.”

  1. Water = Woohoo! (The Hype-Up Phase): Let’s make water sound like the coolest gig in town. Find upbeat books about swimming adventures, watch cartoons where characters are having a blast in the water, or share your own awesome (and calm!) water stories.
  2. Dip a Toe, Test the Waters (Literally!): No need to go from zero to Olympic trials. Start with joyful, no-pressure water encounters. Think epic bath times with a fleet of rubber duckies, puddle-jumping extravaganzas (wellies required!), or a mini splash fest with a hose or water table. Let them call the shots.
  3. Poolside Recon Mission: Become a casual observer of the pool. Visit when it’s calm. Sit by the edge, maybe dangle your own feet in. The mission? Make the pool a familiar, friendly landmark, not a scary monster. No pressure, just good vibes.
  4. Unleash the Fun Brigade: When they seem a bit more curious, introduce the A-team: waterproof toys, silly songs about fishies, and super simple games. Think “who can make the smallest splash?” or “let’s blow bubbles on the water’s surface.”
  5. Be the Calm, Cool Captain: Your relaxed and happy presence is golden. If they’re game, join them in the shallowest part, offering a secure hold and a smile that says, “This is actually pretty neat!”
  6. “I Hear Ya!” Validation Station: Their feelings are real, even if the sea monster isn’t. Acknowledge their apprehension: “Wow, the water looks big today, doesn’t it? It’s okay to feel a bit unsure. We’ll just chill right here.” This builds massive trust.
  7. The Power of Choice: Offer little, low-stakes choices. “Want to bring your blue boat to the steps, or should we see if we can make our fingers dance on the water?” Giving them some command helps them feel in control.

Homeschooling parents often juggle multiple roles, acting as teachers, caregivers, and activity coordinators. It’s a rewarding journey, but it can also be a challenging one, especially when trying to provide a well-rounded education that caters to a child’s individual needs and interests. Swim lessons offer a unique opportunity to enhance a homeschooling curriculum, providing a wealth of educational, social, physical, and mental benefits.

At The Swim Advantage, we’re passionate about teaching swimming to people of all ages and abilities. We believe that swim lessons are a valuable addition to any homeschooling family’s toolkit, providing a fun and engaging way for children to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills.

Educational Benefits: Swim Lessons as a Classroom Extension

Swim lessons aren’t just about learning to float and kick – they’re a gateway to a world of educational opportunities.

  • Science and Physics: Through hands-on experience in the water, children can learn about buoyancy, water displacement, and the principles of hydrodynamics. They can experiment with different strokes and body positions, observing how their movements affect their interaction with the water.
  • Math and Problem-Solving: Swim lessons often involve counting strokes, calculating distances, and understanding basic water safety rules. These activities reinforce math skills and encourage problem-solving abilities in a fun and engaging way.
  • History and Culture: Swimming has a rich history and cultural significance, with different strokes and water activities originating in various parts of the world. Swim lessons can spark an interest in exploring these historical and cultural connections, adding a unique dimension to a homeschooling curriculum.

Social Benefits: Making a Splash with New Friends

Homeschooling can sometimes present challenges in terms of socialization, but swim lessons offer a fantastic opportunity for children to connect with others and develop valuable social skills.

  • Socialization Opportunities: Swim lessons provide a structured environment for homeschoolers to interact with other children, build friendships, and practice social skills in a fun and supportive setting.
  • Teamwork and Cooperation: Many swim lessons involve group activities and games, encouraging children to work together, communicate effectively, and learn the value of cooperation.
  • Communication and Confidence: Learning to swim can boost a child’s confidence and self-esteem, which can translate into improved communication skills and a greater willingness to try new things.

Physical Benefits: Building a Strong Foundation for Health

Swimming is a fantastic form of exercise for people of all ages, and it’s particularly beneficial for children.

  • Physical Fitness: Swimming is a low-impact activity that provides an excellent cardiovascular workout, improving overall fitness, endurance, and muscle strength.
  • Motor Skill Development: Learning to swim helps children develop coordination, balance, and gross motor skills. It also strengthens their muscles and improves their flexibility.
  • Water Safety: Water safety education is crucial for children of all ages. Swim lessons equip children with essential skills to stay safe around water, including basic swimming strokes, floating techniques, and how to recognize and respond to potential hazards.

Mental Benefits: Boosting Confidence and Reducing Stress

Swim lessons offer more than just physical benefits – they can also have a positive impact on a child’s mental and emotional well-being.

  • Stress Reduction: The rhythmic nature of swimming and the feeling of weightlessness in the water can be incredibly relaxing and therapeutic. Swim lessons can provide a healthy outlet for stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.
  • Confidence Building: Mastering new swimming skills and overcoming challenges in the water can be a powerful confidence booster for children. It teaches them resilience, perseverance, and the ability to set and achieve goals.
  • Focus and Concentration: Swim lessons require focus and concentration, which can benefit homeschoolers in their academic pursuits. The ability to follow instructions, stay on task, and maintain focus in a dynamic environment can translate into improved learning outcomes in other areas.

The Mental Health Benefits of Pool Time

August 16, 2024
A woman and two children in a pool

Ah, the pool. Is there anything quite like the feeling of cool water enveloping you, the rhythmic sound of your strokes, and the gentle sunlight filtering through the surface? Swimming isn’t just a fantastic way to stay physically fit; it’s also a powerful tool for nurturing your mental health and well-being. Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer seeking a deeper connection to your passion or someone hesitant to take the plunge, let’s explore how pool time can bring a wave of happiness and serenity to your life.

Dive into Stress Relief and Relaxation

In today’s fast-paced world, stress and anxiety seem to be constant companions. Swimming offers a much-needed escape, a sanctuary where you can leave your worries at the pool’s edge and simply be present in the moment.

The rhythmic back-and-forth of swimming, coupled with the soothing sensation of water, can induce a meditative state, allowing your mind to unwind and find peace. As you focus on your breath and the feel of the water against your skin, everyday stresses fade away, replaced by a sense of calm and tranquility.

Moreover, water’s buoyancy takes the weight off your joints and muscles, releasing physical tension and allowing your body to fully relax. As you glide through the water, it’s as if the weight of the world lifts from your shoulders, replaced by a sense of lightness and freedom.

And let’s not forget those wonderful endorphins! Exercise, including swimming, triggers the release of these natural mood boosters, leaving you feeling happier and more energized. So, if you’re looking for a natural way to de-stress and recharge, a dip in the pool might just be the perfect prescription.

Treading Water Through Anxiety & Depression

Swimming isn’t just about feeling good in the moment; it can also have a profound impact on managing anxiety and depression. Studies have shown that regular swimming can reduce symptoms of both conditions, offering a holistic approach to mental health care.

The controlled breathing required for swimming promotes mindfulness and helps regulate anxiety. As you focus on your breath and the rhythm of your strokes, you’re essentially practicing a form of meditation, calming your nervous system and reducing anxious thoughts.

Furthermore, swimming—especially in group settings or classes—can foster social connection and combat feelings of isolation. Sharing a lane, chatting with fellow swimmers, or participating in a water aerobics class can provide a sense of community and belonging, reminding you that you’re not alone in your journey.

And let’s not underestimate the power of accomplishment. As you learn new strokes, improve your technique, and push your limits, you’ll gain a sense of self-efficacy and confidence that can be incredibly empowering.

Sleep Soundly: The Ripple Effect of Swimming

Struggling to catch those Zs? Swimming can help you sleep more soundly and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. Regular exercise, including swimming, helps regulate your sleep-wake cycle and improves sleep quality.

The physical exertion of swimming tires your body, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. Additionally, the calming and meditative aspects of swimming can help quiet your mind and prepare you for a restful slumber.

Brain Boost: Dive into Cognitive Benefits

Swimming isn’t just a workout for your body; it’s a workout for your brain too! Research suggests that swimming can enhance cognitive function, improve memory, and increase focus.

As you swim, the increased blood flow to your brain delivers oxygen and nutrients, promoting alertness and mental clarity. Some studies have even shown that swimming can help individuals with ADHD or other attention-related challenges improve their concentration and focus.

Body Confidence: Embrace Your Inner Mermaid (or Merman)

Body image concerns can sometimes prevent people from enjoying swimming. But remember, the pool is a judgment-free zone! It’s a place where you can celebrate your body for its strength, ability, and resilience, regardless of its shape or size.

Swimming allows you to focus on what your body can do rather than how it looks. As you glide through the water, feeling the power and grace of your movements, you’ll develop a newfound appreciation for your body and all that it’s capable of.

Make a Splash: Embrace the Joy of Swimming

Whether you’re seeking stress relief, a mood boost, better sleep, or a confidence boost, swimming offers a holistic approach to mental well-being.

So, don’t hesitate to take the plunge! Embrace the joy of swimming and experience its transformative power for yourself.

Ready to dive into the world of aquatic wellness? The Swim Advantage in Orland Park offers a variety of opportunities to experience the mental health benefits of swimming. From private pool rentals for serene solo swims to invigorating fitness classes and personalized swim lessons for all ages and abilities, we’re here to support your journey to a happier, healthier you.

Remember, it’s never too late to learn to swim or to rediscover the joy of being in the water. So, grab your swimsuit, take a deep breath, and let the water carry you to a place of peace and happiness.

Why Swim Lessons Should Be Part of Back To School Plans

Why Swim Lessons Should Be Part of Back To School Plans

August 14, 2024

As the lazy days of summer fade and the back-to-school frenzy begins, we all start juggling schedules, packing lunches, and sharpening pencils. But amidst the hustle and bustle, don’t forget to carve out time for something truly essential: swim lessons! Yes, you heard that right. Even though the beach days might be dwindling, there are countless reasons why your child should continue their aquatic adventures throughout the fall.

Keep Those Skills Sharp: Continued Skill Development and Confidence Building

Just like any other skill, swimming requires practice to maintain and improve. Taking a break from lessons during the school year can lead to a regression in skills and a dip in confidence. By keeping your child enrolled in swim lessons, they’ll continue to build on their foundation, refine their strokes, and become stronger and more confident swimmers.

And remember, swim lessons aren’t just for beginners! Even seasoned swimmers can benefit from ongoing instruction to perfect their technique, learn new strokes, and explore advanced water safety skills. After all, water safety is a year-round concern, not just a summer necessity.

Fit for School: Physical Fitness and Healthy Habits

We all know the importance of keeping kids active and healthy, especially during the school year when they’re spending more time sitting at desks and staring at screens. Swimming is a fantastic way to combat the sedentary lifestyle and ensure your child stays in tip-top shape.

As a full-body workout, swimming engages every major muscle group, improving cardiovascular health, building strength, and boosting endurance. It’s also a low-impact activity, making it gentle on joints and suitable for children of all fitness levels.

But the benefits go beyond just physical fitness. Regular exercise, like swimming, has been shown to improve focus, concentration, and overall well-being. This can translate to better performance in the classroom and a more positive attitude towards learning. So, let those little swimmers splash their way to success!

Stress-Busting Bubbles: Mental Well-being Matters

Let’s be honest, going back to school can be stressful for kids (and parents!). The pressure of academics, social dynamics, and new routines can take a toll on their mental health. Swimming provides a much-needed outlet for stress relief and relaxation.

The rhythmic movements, soothing sound of water, and sense of weightlessness can create a calming and therapeutic experience. It’s a chance for kids to unwind, release tension, and clear their minds after a busy day at school. And who knows, they might even discover a new passion or talent in the process!

Poolside Pals: Socialization and Friendship Building

Swim lessons are more than just skill-building; they’re also a fantastic opportunity for your child to socialize and make new friends. The pool becomes a place where kids can interact, laugh, and support each other as they learn and grow together.

Strong social skills and positive peer interactions are crucial for a child’s development. Swim lessons provide a safe and encouraging environment for kids to build these connections and create lasting friendships. Plus, many swim schools offer additional opportunities for socialization, such as swim teams or clubs, further fostering teamwork and a sense of belonging.

Unplug and Splash: A Break from Routine and Screen Time

Between homework, after-school activities, and the ever-present lure of screens, it can be challenging to find time for unstructured play and physical activity during the school year. Swim lessons offer a welcome break from the daily grind and a chance for kids to unplug, get active, and simply have fun.

Swimming encourages kids to move their bodies, engage their senses, and experience the joy of being in the water. It’s a healthy and refreshing alternative to screen-based activities and can even lead to improved sleep patterns and overall well-being.

The Perfect Pool Party: Activities for Every Age Group

Ready to throw a pool party that’s the talk of the town (or at least your neighborhood)? Whether you’re hosting a birthday bash, family reunion, or just a summer get-together, a pool party is always a guaranteed good time. But to make it truly unforgettable, you need more than just a pool and some snacks. You need activities that will keep everyone entertained, from the tiniest toddlers to the most sophisticated grown-ups.

So, grab your floaties, put on your party hats, and let’s dive into a whirlwind of fun ideas for every age group. Because at this party, nobody’s sitting on the sidelines!

Tiny Tots (0-3 years): Splashy Sensory Play

For the littlest partygoers, it’s all about sensory exploration and simple pleasures. Keep it safe and engaging with these ideas:

  • Baby Races: Let those chubby little legs do their thing! Have parents gently guide their babies across the shallow end in a “race” (it’s more about cute giggles than speed, of course).
  • Floating Fiesta: Gather a bunch of inflatable pool toys and let the babies go wild! They’ll love batting at the toys, splashing around, and discovering the joys of buoyancy.
  • Bubble Bonanza: Blow bubbles galore and watch the babies reach, grab, and pop with delight. Bonus points if you use bubbles that leave a colorful trail in the water!
  • Waterfall Wonders: Fill a cup or small watering can with water and gently pour it over your baby’s head and shoulders. The sensation of the water flowing down their skin is both soothing and stimulating.
  • Sensory Bins: Set up a few small bins filled with water and safe objects like bath toys, sponges, and cups. Let the babies explore different textures and create their own little water worlds.

Preschoolers (3-5 years): Games, Giggles, and Goofy Fun

Preschoolers are all about energy and imagination. Keep them engaged and entertained with these playful activities:

  • Marco Polo with a Twist: Play the classic game of Marco Polo, but instead of saying “Marco,” have the seeker make a silly animal noise (like a duck quack or a monkey screech).
  • Noodle Races: Hand out pool noodles and let the kids race across the pool (with adult supervision, of course). You can even create a makeshift obstacle course with inflatable toys or floating rings.
  • Water Balloon Toss: Fill up a bunch of water balloons and have a classic toss. Or, for a less messy (and more sustainable) option, use reusable water balls or sponges.
  • Duck, Duck, Splash!: Play a modified version of Duck, Duck, Goose, where the “goose” gets a gentle splash instead of a chase.
  • DIY Water Slide: Set up a Slip ‘N Slide on the grass or use a large tarp and a hose to create your own homemade water slide.

Big Kids (6-12 years): Action-Packed Adventures

Older kids crave excitement and challenge. Get their adrenaline pumping with these action-packed activities:

  • Water Basketball or Volleyball: Set up a net in the pool and let the games begin! Use a beach ball or a smaller, lighter ball for younger players.
  • Shark Attack Tag: Choose one person to be the “shark.” The shark has to tag the other swimmers, who then become “minnows” and help the shark tag the rest of the players.
  • Diving for Treasure: Hide a bunch of small toys or coins at the bottom of the pool and let the kids dive to retrieve them. The person with the most treasure wins!
  • Pool Noodle Relay Races: Divide the kids into teams and have them race across the pool using pool noodles as their “horses.”
  • Water Gun Wars: Arm your little warriors with water guns, water balloons, or even squirt bottles and let them have an epic water battle.

Teenagers & Adults: Laid-Back Fun & Friendly Competition

Teenagers and adults might prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, but they still want to have a good time. Here are some ideas to keep them entertained:

  • Floating Lounge: Set up a relaxing lounge area with inflatable chairs, rafts, and plenty of shade. Create a chill playlist and let your guests unwind and soak up the sun (or escape the heat indoors).
  • Water Aerobics or Yoga: Lead a fun water aerobics or yoga session for a refreshing and invigorating workout.
  • Poolside Games: Organize a game of cornhole, Kan Jam, or ladder toss on the pool deck. You can even create a pool-themed trivia game or charades.
  • DIY Cocktail Bar: Set up a DIY cocktail bar with various mixers. Let your guests get creative and craft their own signature drinks.
  • Movie Night Under the Stars: If you have access to a projector and screen, set up a movie night by the pool. Choose a classic summer flick or a family favorite.

Building Tiny Fins: Boosting Your Baby's Water Confidence

Hey there, proud parents of adorable water babies (or soon-to-be water babies)! It’s never too early to introduce your little one to the wonderful world of water. Whether it’s a gentle splash in the bathtub or a playful dip in a baby pool, those early water experiences can lay the foundation for a lifetime of confidence, enjoyment, and even essential safety skills.

So, grab your rubber duckies and let’s dive into the exciting world of building your baby’s water confidence!

Why Water Confidence Matters (More Than Just Cute Photos)

Now, I know those adorable photos of your baby splashing around are priceless, but there’s more to early water exposure than just Instagram-worthy moments. It’s about nurturing a positive relationship with water, helping your baby develop essential skills, and reducing any potential fear or anxiety around water.

Here are just a few reasons why building water confidence in your baby is so important:

  • Natural Instincts: Babies are born with a natural affinity for water. They spent nine months floating in the womb, after all! Early water exposure allows them to tap into these instincts and feel comfortable in an environment that comes naturally to them.
  • Motor Skills & Coordination: Splashing, kicking, and reaching for toys in the water helps babies develop their motor skills and coordination. It’s like a mini workout for their growing bodies!
  • Sensory Exploration: Water is a sensory wonderland for babies! The feel of the water on their skin, the sound of splashes, and the sight of colorful toys all contribute to their sensory development.
  • Bonding Time: Water play is a fantastic way to bond with your baby. The close physical contact, playful interaction, and shared laughter create lasting memories and strengthen your relationship.
  • Future Swimming Skills: Babies who are introduced to water early on are more likely to embrace swim lessons later in life. They’ll already be comfortable in the water and have a foundation of basic skills, making the transition to formal lessons much smoother.

Baby’s First Splash: Tips for a Gentle Introduction

Ready to make a splash with your little one? Here are some tips for creating a positive and enjoyable first water experience:

  • Create a Relaxing Atmosphere: Choose a warm, calm environment for your baby’s first dip. The bathtub is a great place to start, as is a small, inflatable baby pool. Ensure the water temperature is comfortably warm, around 90-92°F (32-33°C).
  • Go Slow and Steady: Start by gently pouring water over your baby’s feet and legs, allowing them to get used to the sensation. Gradually move up to their tummy and chest, always watching for cues of discomfort.
  • Soothe with Your Voice: Use a calm and reassuring tone as you talk to your baby. Sing songs, tell stories, and make eye contact to keep them engaged and relaxed.
  • Make It Playful: Let your baby splash, kick, and explore the water at their own pace. Introduce simple toys like rubber duckies, floating balls, or stacking cups to add to the fun.

From Tub Time to Pool Time: Fun Activities to Boost Water Confidence

Once your baby is comfortable with basic water exposure, you can start introducing more engaging activities:

  • Blowing Bubbles: Show your baby how to blow bubbles in the water. This helps them practice breath control and explore the sensations of water on their face.
  • Kicking Contests: Hold your baby securely and let them kick their legs in the water. This not only strengthens their muscles but also creates a fun and playful experience.
  • Supported Swimming: Gently guide your baby through the water while supporting their body. This helps them get used to the feeling of movement in the water and builds their confidence.
  • Waterfall Fun: Use a cup or watering can to gently pour water over your baby’s head and shoulders. This can be a fun sensory experience and helps them get used to having water on their face.
  • Sing-Along Splashing: Make up silly songs and rhymes about water and bath time. Singing together can make the experience more enjoyable and help your baby relax.

Toddler Pool Time: 5 Games to Make a Splash

toddler-pool-time - 1

Get ready to turn your pool into a toddler-approved water wonderland! We know toddlers have endless energy and an insatiable curiosity, especially when it comes to water. So, let’s ditch the boredom and crank up the fun with five splish-tastic games that will have your little one giggling, splashing, and (bonus!) maybe even tiring them out a bit.

The Great Bubble Escape

Toddlers love bubbles! Blow a bunch into the pool and let them chase, pop, and squeal with delight. It’s a simple yet endlessly entertaining game that also helps them practice breath control and coordination. Plus, the giggles are contagious!

Ring Around the Rosie (with Floaties!)

Gather your little ones in a circle (with their trusty floaties, of course), hold hands, and sing the classic “Ring Around the Rosie” song. When you get to “We all fall down,” everyone gently falls back into the water (with your support, of course). It’s a silly and fun way to introduce the concept of floating and getting comfortable in the water.

Noodle Jousting

Who needs horses and armor when you have pool noodles? Let your little knights grab a noodle and gently “joust” with each other in the shallow end. It’s a safe and hilarious way to burn off energy and practice balance. Just be sure to supervise closely to avoid any bonks or boo-boos.

Treasure Hunt Under the Sea

Scatter some colorful diving toys or sinking rings at the bottom of the pool and let the treasure hunt begin! Your little pirates will love exploring the underwater world and collecting their loot. This game encourages diving skills, hand-eye coordination, and (most importantly) a sense of adventure!

Red Light, Green Light (Water Edition)

This classic game gets a watery twist! Stand at one end of the pool and call out “green light” for your little ones to swim or splash towards you. When you yell “red light,” they have to freeze in place. The first one to reach you wins! This game is great for practicing listening skills, following directions, and, of course, having a blast.

Make a Splash and Learn to Swim!

Remember, these games are not only fun but also a great way to introduce your toddler to the water and build their confidence. If you’re looking for a more structured learning environment to help your little one develop their swimming skills, check out the toddler swim lessons at The Swim Advantage in Orland Park! Our experienced instructors create a safe and playful atmosphere where toddlers can learn essential water safety skills and build a lifelong love of swimming.
