As someone who has called Joliet home for the last decade, I know exactly what makes this city tick. We are a community of hard workers, busy families, and packed weekend schedules. Between school drop-offs, baseball practices, and just navigating the daily hustle, it is incredibly easy for certain things to get pushed to the back burner.
And in a big, bustling city like ours, one of the things we tend to forget about most is the water.
Now, I know what you might be thinking. “We live in Joliet! Aside from the Des Plaines River, we aren’t exactly a beach town.” And let’s be honest, none of us are trying to wade into the Des Plaines for a weekend swim! But the reality is, knowing how to swim is one of the most vital life skills you can have in this city, and it’s time we start treating it that way.
Here is a local’s take on why diving into swim lessons is the best thing you can do for your family this year.
We might be surrounded by concrete and traffic, but Joliet is actually centrally located right in the middle of some incredible aquatic adventures.
Think about our summers. We are just a short drive from the beautiful, sandy shores of the Indiana Dunes and the bustling beaches of Chicago. We are surrounded by amazing local water parks, splash pads, and community aquatic centers. And perhaps most importantly, we are a city of neighborhoods filled with friends’ and family members’ backyard pools.
When summer hits, the water is calling. Knowing how to swim isn’t just about safety; it’s the key to unlocking the very best of what our region has to offer, allowing you to say “yes” to those invites without a second thought.
When you don’t wake up and see an ocean or a massive lake out your window every day, it’s easy to develop a bit of a blind spot. We start to think of swimming as an “extra” activity, something nice to have, but not strictly necessary.
This mindset can actually make families less prepared when they do finally go on a family vacation or send their kids to a friend’s backyard pool party. We need to shift our thinking and prioritize water safety as a fundamental life skill, right up there with teaching our kids to look both ways (twice) before crossing Jefferson.
This is exactly why bringing The Swim Advantage to Joliet means so much to me. I want to see our community flourish, thrive, and enjoy the water safely. Operating out of our new home at The Flex, our programs are designed specifically with busy Joliet families in mind.
Here is how we are doing things differently in our own backyard:
Learning to swim is about empowerment. It’s about building undeniable confidence and ensuring that when those summer invitations roll in, your whole family is ready to jump in safely.
