A Guide to Finding the Right Swim Program for Your Child

A Guide to Finding the Right Swim Program for Your Child

This is the year. You’ve decided it’s time for swim lessons. You do a quick search and are immediately met with a dozen schools in the area, all claiming to be the “best.” The options can feel overwhelming. How do you choose?

Here’s the secret: The “best” program isn’t just about a fancy facility or a catchy name. It’s about finding a place that is not only objectively excellent but is also the perfect match for your child’s unique personality and learning style. As every parent knows, a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work for raising kids, and it certainly doesn’t work for teaching them a critical life skill.

This guide will walk you through what to look for, so you can find a program that doesn’t just teach your child to swim, but teaches them to love swimming.

The Non-Negotiables — Universal Signs of a Great Program

Before you even think about the “fit,” every program you consider should meet these essential criteria. These are the foundations of a safe, professional, and effective swim school.

  • Safety is an Obsession, Not an Afterthought: Look for instructors with current certifications (like Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid). The school should have clear, consistently enforced safety rules and maintain proper student-to-instructor ratios for the age group.
  • A Clear, Proven Curriculum: Ask about their levels and skill progression. They should be able to easily explain what skills a child learns at each stage and what they need to master to advance. A clear path means clear progress.
  • A Clean and Professional Environment: Trust your eyes and nose. Is the pool deck clean and safe? Is the water sparkling clear? A well-maintained facility is a strong indicator of a well-run program.
  • Engaged and Happy Instructors: Take a moment to watch the teachers. Do they seem passionate, patient, and genuinely engaged with their students? A happy, supported instructor is one of the biggest assets your child can have.

Finding the Perfect Fit — Matching the Program to the Personality

Once you’ve confirmed a school has the non-negotiables covered, it’s time to become a matchmaker. You know your child best. Here’s how to match their temperament to a teaching style.

  • For the Cautious, Observant Child: This child often thrives on predictability and needs time to warm up to new situations. They want to know what’s coming next.

Look for: A program with clear routines, consistent instructors from week to week, and a calm, encouraging environment. A chaotic, “free-for-all” style of lesson might feel overwhelming and stressful for them.

  • For the Energetic, Playful Child: This child learns best by doing, moving, and having fun. They are motivated by engagement and excitement.

Look for: A program that cleverly integrates games, songs, and imaginative play into the learning process. An overly rigid, militaristic program might stifle their natural enthusiasm and make lessons feel like a chore.

  • For the Analytical, “Why?” Child: This child’s brain is always working. They need to understand the mechanics and the reasoning behind a skill to truly buy in.

Look for: Instructors who take a moment to explain the “why” in simple terms. A teacher who says, “When you pull your arm like this, it pushes the water back, and that’s what moves you forward!” will connect deeply with this type of learner.

  • For the Goal-Oriented, Motivated Child: This child is driven by achievement and loves to see their progress.

Look for: A program with a clear leveling system, visible skill charts, or celebratory milestones—like ribbons or certificates—to mark their accomplishments and keep them motivated.

Your Next Step: Become an Investigator

Now you have the tools. Here’s how to use them.

  1. Ask the Right Questions: Before signing up, call the school. Ask about their teaching philosophy. “How do you handle a hesitant child?” “Can you describe a typical lesson for a 5-year-old?” Their answers will tell you a lot.
  2. Observe a Class: This is the single best thing you can do. Ask if you can watch a lesson for the age group you’re considering. You’ll get an immediate feel for the program’s energy, structure, and style.
  3. Trust Your Gut: You are the expert on your child. If a program feels right, it probably is. If something feels off, it’s okay to keep looking.

The Swim Advantage Philosophy

Finding a program that thinks this deeply about individual learning styles is the key to success. At The Swim Advantage, this philosophy is at the core of everything we do.

While we have a structured, proven curriculum, our instructors are trained to be adaptable. They have a whole toolbox of techniques—from playful games to direct, mechanical instruction—that they use to meet the needs of each unique child in their group. We aren’t just one style; we are a smart, flexible blend of styles, because that’s what children deserve.

We believe in finding the perfect fit, and that starts with a conversation about your child.

The Right Start for a Lifetime of Swimming

The right swim program doesn’t just teach your child how to swim; it teaches them that they are capable, confident, and that learning can be a joyful experience tailored just for them.

If you’re in the Orland Park area and looking for a swim program that cares as much about your child as you do, we invite you to get in touch. Let’s talk about your swimmer and find the perfect path for their journey in the water.

5 Reasons Why Fall is the Best Time to Start Swim Lessons

Reasons Why Fall Is The Best Time For Swim Lessons

As soon as the first school bell rings, a collective myth seems to settle over the Midwest: swim season is over. We trade swimsuits for sweaters, pool days for pumpkin patches, and put our swimming goals into hibernation until May.

We’re here to let you in on an insider’s secret: that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Fall isn’t the end of swimming; it’s the beginning of a golden opportunity. It’s the season where real, lasting skills are built and confidence takes root. If you or your child want to be a truly comfortable and capable swimmer, autumn is, without a doubt, the best time to start. Here’s why.

1. You’ll Be Miles Ahead When Summer Returns.

Think about the “May Scramble.” It’s that frantic period where everyone rushes to sign up for lessons, hoping to cram a year’s worth of learning into a few short weeks before the first big pool party. It’s stressful and often ineffective.

Now, imagine a different scenario. When that first warm day hits next year, you or your child aren’t starting from scratch. You’re walking onto the pool deck with nine months of consistent practice under your belt. The confidence is real. The skills are solid. You’re not learning; you’re swimming. Starting in the fall is like giving your future self a superpower.

2. It Slots Perfectly into the “Back-to-Routine” Rhythm.

In the fall, you’re already in “schedule mode.” School, sports, and activities are all finding their weekly groove. This is the perfect time to add a swim lesson to the calendar, making it a consistent part of your family’s routine. For kids, it’s a fantastic, screen-free way to burn off that cooped-up energy after a day at school. For adults, it’s a perfect “me-time” appointment to claim as the summer chaos subsides.

3. It’s the Unspoken “VIP Season.”

Want to know the best-kept secret of the “off-season”? It’s often a better experience. With fewer crowds and less demand than the pre-summer rush, you’ll often find more scheduling flexibility and smaller class sizes. That means more breathing room in the pool and more personalized attention from the instructor. It’s a chance to get a premium learning experience.

4. It’s Your Guaranteed Dose of Tropical Warmth.

Let’s face it, fall weekends can be a toss-up. Soccer games get rained out, chilly winds clear the parks, and “playing outside” loses its appeal. But a swim lesson? It’s the most reliable activity on your calendar. Imagine walking out of a chilly, grey October afternoon and into the warm, humid air of our indoor pool. The water is always perfect. It’s a mini-tropical escape you can count on every week.

5. You Can Claim a Goal for Yourself Before the January Rush.

This one is especially for the adults. Every year, millions of people make a New Year’s resolution to finally learn to swim or to get back into a fitness routine. Why wait for the crowded, chaotic energy of January? The fall provides a calmer, more focused season to invest in yourself. Starting now is a powerful act of self-care, allowing you to build a new skill and a healthy habit before the holiday frenzy begins.

Next Summer’s Confidence is Built This Fall.

The choice is clear. You can pack the swimsuits away and hope for the best next May, or you can make a smart investment in yourself or your child right now. The consistent, focused work you put in this autumn will unlock a lifetime of safer, more joyful summers.

The water is warm, and we’re ready for you. Visit our website to see the new fall schedule for all ages and skill levels at The Swim Advantage in Orland Park and discover why autumn is the secret season of champions!

Trust Your Gut: A Parent’s Guide to Swim Lesson Quality

Trsut Your Gut: A Parent's Guide to Swim Lesson Quality

You’re sitting on the pool deck benches, scrolling through your phone while keeping one eye on your child’s swim lesson. But your attention keeps drifting to the next lane over. In that lane, an instructor has their class engaged—they’re taking turns, listening to instructions, and practicing their kicks. It’s organized. It’s productive.

Then you look back at your child’s lane. It’s… chaos. Two kids are in a splashing war in the corner, another is hanging off the lane line, and the instructor seems flustered, their voice barely rising above the noise. Very little actual instruction appears to be happening.

An uneasy feeling settles in your stomach. You start asking yourself questions: Am I being too critical? Is this just how kids are? We’re paying good money for this. More importantly, is my child actually learning to be safe?

Let us tell you right now: Your gut feeling is valid, and it’s telling you something important. This guide is designed to help you understand what a high-quality swim lesson looks like and to empower you with a clear, respectful plan for what to do when you see the opposite.

Why a Quality Instructor Isn’t Just a “Nice-to-Have”

This situation is about more than just bad customer service. When a swim lesson is ineffective, it has real consequences.

  • It’s a Safety Issue: This is the number one priority. A disorganized class is an unsafe class. An instructor who has lost control of the group cannot properly supervise every child, and that’s a risk no parent should have to accept.
  • It’s a Financial Issue: Swim lessons are an investment in a life skill. When a class is poorly managed, you are wasting both your valuable time and your hard-earned money.
  • It’s a Confidence Issue (for Your Child): A chaotic or negative experience can inadvertently teach a child that the water is a place for fear or unstructured goofing off. This can undermine the goal of building respect for the water and can even make them dislike swimming altogether.

What to Look For: Green Flags vs. Red Flags

It’s easy to spot the difference between a great lesson and a problematic one when you know what to look for.

Green Flags (Signs of a Great Lesson):

Structure & Control: The instructor has a clear lesson plan and commands the class’s attention respectfully. There’s a noticeable rhythm and purpose to the class.

Active Engagement: Kids are consistently busy and learning. Even when waiting their turn, they might be practicing kicks on the wall or blowing bubbles.

Individual Connection: The instructor makes eye contact with and gives brief, specific feedback to each child throughout the lesson.

Safety is Evident: Clear rules (“walk, don’t run,” “wait for me to say go”) are established and calmly enforced. The instructor is always scanning the entire group.

Productive Fun: There is plenty of laughter and games, but they are all cleverly designed to teach a specific swimming skill.

Red Flags (Signs of a Problem):

Chaos Reigns: Kids are running wild, not listening, or splashing disruptively with little to no correction from the instructor.

Instructor Appears Disengaged: They seem overwhelmed, are frequently distracted by things outside the pool, or worse, are looking at their phone.

Excessive “Wall Time”: The majority of the lesson is spent with kids sitting on the side, getting cold while waiting for their 30-second turn to swim.

No Clear Plan: The lesson feels random and disjointed, with no logical progression of skills from one week to the next.

What to Do: A Parent’s 3-Step Action Plan

If you’re seeing more red flags than green, it’s time to act. Here is a clear, non-confrontational process.

    1. Observe & Confirm. Before you act, watch one more lesson to confirm it’s a consistent pattern, not just a one-off bad day for the instructor or the group.
    2. Speak to Management Privately. This is crucial. Do not confront the instructor on the pool deck in front of students and other parents. Instead, go to the deck supervisor or front desk and politely ask to speak with a manager. Frame your conversation calmly and with “I” statements: “I’ve noticed my child’s class seems a bit chaotic, and I’m concerned about the amount of instruction they’re receiving.” This is about seeking a solution, not placing blame.
    3. Look for a Resolution. A good swim school will take your concerns seriously. They will listen, thank you for the valuable feedback, and offer a path forward. This might be observing the class themselves, providing more training to the instructor, or offering to move your child to a different class. A dismissive attitude is a major red flag about the entire organization’s values.

Our Commitment at The Swim Advantage

This is a situation no parent should have to navigate alone. A swim school’s philosophy on instructor training and parent communication is one of the most important things to consider.

At The Swim Advantage, every instructor undergoes rigorous, ongoing training not just in stroke mechanics, but in class management, child development, and our specific, proven curriculum. We hire for passion and train for excellence. Furthermore, we believe in an open-door policy. We want you to speak up. Your trust is our top priority, and we view your feedback not as a complaint, but as a valuable tool that helps us maintain the highest standards of safety and quality for every single student.

You Are Your Child’s Best Advocate

Learning to swim is too important to leave to chance. You have a right to expect quality, safety, and professionalism from any program you choose. Trust your instincts. A quality swim lesson should build your confidence in the program just as much as it builds your child’s confidence in the water.

If you’re looking for a program built on a foundation of expert instruction and open communication, we invite you to learn more about The Swim Advantage difference here in Orland Park.

A Guide to Swim Lessons for Autistic Individuals

A guide to Swim Lessons For Autistic Individuals

There is a unique language that water speaks. It’s in the feeling of weightlessness that lifts you up, the quiet hum you hear when you dip below the surface, and the gentle, consistent pressure that can feel like a comforting hug. It is a world of singular focus, a place that can be both calming and exhilarating.

We believe the joy, confidence, and life-saving skill of swimming belong to everyone. Every single person, with their unique way of experiencing the world, deserves an environment where they can learn and thrive safely, happily, and with unwavering support.

This is meant to be a warm, open conversation for autistic individuals and their families. It’s an exploration of how swim lessons, when approached with understanding, patience, and respect, can be a wonderfully positive and empowering experience.

The Unique Harmony: Why the Pool Can Be a Perfect Place

For many autistic individuals, the aquatic environment offers a unique and positive synergy. It’s not about changing who someone is; it’s about finding an environment where they can flourish.

  • A Calming Sensory Haven: In a world that can sometimes feel loud, bright, and unpredictable, the pool can be a sanctuary. The consistent, gentle pressure of the water provides proprioceptive input that can be incredibly calming and organizing for the nervous system.
  • A World of Predictable Structure: The pool itself has clear physical boundaries. A well-structured lesson, built on familiar routines and the naturally repetitive motions of swimming, creates a predictable environment that can be deeply comforting and reduce anxiety, making it an ideal state for learning.
  • A Boost for Body Awareness and Motor Skills: The water is a fantastic teacher. It provides natural resistance while supporting the body, creating a fun, low-impact arena to develop motor planning, build strength, and enhance coordination.
  • A Gentle Pathway to Social Connection: Swimming is often a wonderful “parallel activity,” allowing for shared space and enjoyment with others without the pressures of direct social engagement. Over time, the confidence gained in lessons can open doors to future social opportunities like pool parties and family vacations, allowing the individual to participate joyfully and on their own terms.

Navigating the Waters Together: Acknowledging Feelings of Hesitation

Starting a new activity in an unfamiliar environment can be a source of hesitation for anyone. We want to acknowledge some of the feelings that new swimmers and their families might experience.

  • For Caregivers: We understand that safety is the top priority. Concerns about a loved one’s security around water are completely valid. It’s also natural to wonder how communication will work in a lesson, or how an individual might react to the sensory environment of a pool. These are important considerations that we respect.
  • For the Swimmer: A new place can be a lot to take in. The echoing sounds of a pool, the smell of chlorine, the change in temperature, an unfamiliar space, or meeting a new person—these are all valid reasons to feel hesitant at first.
  • Our Approach: A great swim program acknowledges that these feelings are a normal part of the learning process. We believe that building trust is the first step, and that means moving forward together at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for the swimmer.

The Art of the Adapted Lesson: Our Commitment to Each Swimmer

There is no single “right way” to teach swimming, because every swimmer is a unique individual. Our commitment is to remain flexible and student-centered in our approach.

  • Getting to Know Each Swimmer: We believe the best lessons start with understanding. Learning about a student’s strengths, communication style, and what helps them feel comfortable allows our instructors to create a more positive and effective experience.
  • A Toolbox of Strategies: A successful lesson often involves using different teaching tools. This can include using visual aids to show what’s next, breaking down skills into smaller steps, or using games and songs to make learning fun. The goal is always to find what works best for that specific student on that specific day.
  • Celebrating All Progress: We believe that progress happens when a student feels safe and successful. We celebrate every step forward, whether it’s putting their face in the water for the first time or swimming a full lap. Every achievement is a victory worth recognizing.
  • Water Safety as Empowerment: Our core mission is to teach water safety. We focus on these crucial skills not from a place of fear, but as tools of empowerment. Mastering skills like getting back to the wall or floating on one’s back builds true, lasting confidence in the water.

Every Splash Opens a World of Possibility

Swimming is so much more than a sport or a safety protocol. It is a potential source of immense joy, pride, and connection that should be wonderfully and widely accessible to the autistic community. Our pool is a community space where every individual is seen, respected, understood, and celebrated for exactly who they are.

Imagine the future possibilities—the pool parties, the beach vacations, the simple, profound joy of a summer afternoon spent in the water, confidently and happily.

A Welcoming Invitation

If this article resonates with you, or if you simply have questions about how a swim program could be tailored to the autistic person in your life, we invite you to start a conversation with us. We’re not here to sell you a program; we’re here to listen and explore possibilities together.

The Unsung Hero of Summer: An Ode to the Indoor Pool

An ode to the indoor pool
July 15, 2025

This past Saturday, I found myself playing the official sport of Midwest summers: the Weather Gamble. You know the one. You’re at a family BBQ, the pool is sparkling, but every five minutes, someone is squinting at a single dark cloud on the horizon and refreshing their weather app. That was me, standing by my sister’s wonderful pool, watching the kids jump in and out as we all debated, “Is it going to storm? Is that thunder? Should we wait?”

It was fun, of course, but it was also work! And in that moment of uncertainty, it hit me. We all spend so much time chasing the perfect sunny day that we overlook the quiet, reliable, and truly unsung hero of summer fun.

While outdoor pools get all the summer glory, I’m here to make a bold, heartfelt case for their amazing, climate-controlled cousin: the indoor pool.

The Surprising Perks of a Summer Swim… Indoors

Before you say it, I know what you’re thinking. But hear me out! Here are the insider secrets to why an indoor pool is a perfect summer life hack.

  1. Your Plans are 100% Weatherproof. This is the undeniable superpower of the indoor pool. No rain delays. No 60-minute lightning warnings that clear the pool right when the fun is getting started. No “is it too windy for the baby?” debates. When you plan an indoor swim, it happens. Period.
  2. It’s a Guaranteed “No-Fry” Zone. Let’s talk about the sun. We love it, but it’s work. With an indoor pool, you can forget wrestling a squirming toddler to reapply sunscreen for the third time. You can forget discovering that one spot on your back you accidentally missed. Our roof is your SPF 1000. It’s a guaranteed burn-free experience.
  3. A Controlled, Calmer Environment. Public outdoor pools can be a wonderful, chaotic symphony of sounds, crowds, and activity. But sometimes, you just want a calmer vibe. An indoor pool, especially a dedicated swim school like ours, offers a less overwhelming space that’s perfect for new learners, little ones, or anyone who prefers to hear themselves think.
  4. The Water is Always Perfect. No shocking, breath-stealing dips on a cooler-than-expected August day! Our pool’s water temperature is kept just right—consistent and comfortable every single time you visit. No toe-testing required.
  5. Zero Uninvited Guests. We love nature, but maybe not in the pool with us. At our indoor pool, there are no bees dive-bombing your fun, no mysterious insects to scoop out of the water, and no leaves to dodge. Just you and the clear, clean pool.

Okay, So How Do I Get In On This?

So, you’re sold on the idea of a perfect, weatherproof swim. You’re ready for a guaranteed good time. That’s where we come in, by offering unique ways for you to enjoy our pool.

  • For the Ultimate Hassle-Free Party: Private Rentals! Imagine hosting a summer birthday party where you don’t even have to look at the forecast. Our private pool rentals give your group the whole place to yourselves. It’s the ultimate party hack, guaranteed to be a splash hit, rain or shine.

Life as a Swim Instructor: More High-Fives, Less Paperwork

Life as a swim instructor
July 8, 2025

Have you ever been at the pool and found yourself watching a swim lesson? Maybe you saw a great instructor working with a timid child, patiently turning fear into fun with silly games and gentle encouragement. And then, you witnessed it—that magic “click” moment. The child who was clinging to the wall finally puts their face in the water, pops back up with wide eyes, and breaks into a huge, proud smile.

In that moment, maybe you felt a little spark of an idea. I could do that. I think I would love doing that.

If you’ve ever had that thought, this article is for you. It’s an honest look at what it truly means to be a swim instructor—the joys, the challenges, and the incredible rewards—to help you decide if it’s the right path for you to make a splash that truly matters.

The “Perks” That Don’t Fit on a Pay Stub

Being a swim instructor is more than just a job; it’s a role with deep, intrinsic rewards that you carry with you long after you’ve dried off.

  • You Teach a Life-Saving Skill: This is the big one. The most profound benefit. You are giving children and adults a tool that could literally save their life one day. The impact of that skill is immeasurable and lasts a lifetime. There are very few jobs in the world that can claim that.
  • You Witness Courage Every Single Day: You are a confidence coach. You get a front-row seat to watch people of all ages face their fears, push past their limits, and build unshakable self-esteem. The pride you feel for your students is immense.
  • Your “Office” is a Pool: Forget quiet cubicles. Your work environment is active, energetic, and fun. You get paid to move, play, and make a positive impact, ending your shift feeling energized, not drained.
  • You Become a Master Communicator: This job hones incredible life skills. You learn how to explain complex movements simply, build trust with anxious students, command a group’s attention, and motivate others—all powerful tools for any career path.

Before You Dive In: A Quick Gut Check

Being a great swim instructor isn’t just about being a good swimmer. It’s about being a great teacher and role model. Ask yourself these questions honestly:

  • Do You Have Next-Level Patience? Can you celebrate the tiny victory of someone blowing bubbles for the first time with the same genuine enthusiasm as someone swimming a full lap? Progress isn’t always linear, and patience is your most important tool.
  • Are You a True “People Person”? Can you connect with a shy 4-year-old, a nervous 40-year-old, and a curious parent, all in the same hour? This job is about building relationships.
  • Can You Be Both Silly and Serious? The role requires making silly fish faces to coax a giggle from a toddler, but also being firm, clear, and authoritative when it comes to safety rules.
  • Do You Genuinely Love the Water? Your passion and comfort are contagious. A genuine love for the aquatic world and a belief in the power of swimming will be your greatest teaching assets.

Why Your Team Matters: The Power of a Great Swim School

You could try to teach lessons on your own, but joining an established program is crucial for your success and fulfillment.

  • A Proven Roadmap & Training: A great school doesn’t just throw you in the deep end. We provide you with a proven curriculum and hands-on training, giving you the tools and techniques to be an effective, confident teacher from day one.
  • A Built-in Support System: You’re not on an island. You have colleagues to share tips with, a manager for guidance, and a team that has your back. You learn and grow together in a professional environment.
  • We Handle the Hassle, You Handle the Teaching: A professional school manages the scheduling, insurance, facility logistics, and marketing, allowing you to focus on what you do best: connecting with your students and teaching them to swim.
  • A Shared Mission: You become part of a community that is passionate about water safety and dedicated to making a real impact, one lesson at a time.

A mother and three kids happily playing in the pool
July 2, 2025

The scene is as American as apple pie. The air is buzzing with laughter and music. You can smell the sizzle of the BBQ, hear the pop of a can opening, and then, that unmistakable sound of a perfect cannonball splashing into the pool. Your child, beaming and dripping, calls out, “Come on in, the water’s perfect!”

You smile, a genuine smile because you love seeing them happy. “No thanks, I’m good right here!” you call back, settling into your trusty lounge chair.

For millions of adults, this is the unofficial uniform of summer water events: shorts, a t-shirt, and a seat on the sidelines. It’s a comfortable spot, but it can also feel like an invisible barrier, separating you from the heart of the fun. It’s a feeling of being a spectator to your own life’s brightest memories.

But what if this were the last 4th of July you spent this way? What if this moment, right now, became the starting line for a new kind of freedom?

It’s Never Too Late to Give Yourself the Gift of Water

Learning to swim as an adult isn’t just about conquering a fear or checking a box. It’s about giving your future self the gift of full participation. It’s about unlocking experiences you may have thought were no longer for you.

  • The Gift of Connection: Imagine playfully splashing with your kids or grandkids, not just watching from the deck. Imagine joining friends on a spontaneous boat trip without a moment’s hesitation. You’re no longer just at the memory; you are in it.
  • The Gift of Confidence: There is a deep, unshakable self-esteem that comes from mastering something you once thought impossible. The courage you build in the water spills over into every other area of your life, reminding you of what you’re capable of.
  • The Gift of Wellness: Swimming is the perfect exercise: a low-impact, full-body workout that builds strength and cardiovascular health without punishing your joints. It’s also a proven stress-reliever, with the water calming the mind as it strengthens the body.
  • The Gift of Spontaneity: This is the freedom to say “YES!” to life’s invitations. A last-minute trip to the lake, a destination wedding on the beach, a neighbor’s pool party, your world of possibility expands.

Busting the Myths That Keep You on the Chair

If it’s so great, why haven’t you done it yet? Usually, a few persistent (and false) ideas are to blame. Let’s bust them right now.

  • You might think: “I’ll look silly and embarrassed.”
    • The reality is: Our adult classes are filled with… other adults! It is a supportive, non-judgmental zone where every single person shares the same goal. Our instructors specialize in creating a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere because they understand the courage it takes to start.
  • You might think: “It’s just too hard for an adult to learn.”
    • The reality is: Adults have advantages kids don’t! You understand concepts like buoyancy and leverage. You can follow multi-step instructions. Most importantly, you have powerful self-motivation. You simply learn differently, not harder.
  • You might think: “My fear of the water is too strong.”
    • The reality is: A good instructor doesn’t throw you in the deep end. They start where you are. The very first lessons are about comfort, control, and breathing. You’ll begin by simply getting comfortable in shallow water, at your own pace, in a controlled and safe environment.

Your First Steps Off the Lounge Chair

This journey doesn’t start with a leap. It starts with a single, gentle step.

  1. Acclimate to the Environment: Visit our pool during a quiet time. Just sit by the edge and watch. Listen to the sounds. Dip your feet in. No pressure. Just be in the space.
  2. Befriend Your Breath: Often, the biggest hurdle is the sensation of water on your face. Practice at home. In the shower, let water run over your face. In a bowl of water, practice gently blowing bubbles. Getting comfortable with this is a huge win.
  3. Seek a Professional Guide: Learning from a trained instructor is crucial. They know how to build trust and progress safely, unlike a well-meaning friend or partner who might push you too far, too fast.
  4. Redefine Your “Win”: Your first goal isn’t to swim a lap. It’s simply to show up. Your next goal might be to put your whole face in the water while holding the wall. Celebrate these small, brave victories. They are the foundation of your success.

A New Tradition for Next Year Starts Today

Imagine it’s the 4th of July next year. The sun is shining, the same laughter is in the air. But this time, when someone asks, “Want to hop in?” you say “Absolutely,” and step right into the heart of the fun, right into the heart of the memories.

That journey starts with the decision you make today.

Here at The Swim Advantage in Orland Park, our adult learn-to-swim programs are designed specifically for you. We believe it’s never too late to find your freedom in the water. Call us or visit our website, and let’s start planning for next year’s celebration.

The Coolest Workout of the Summer (Literally)

June 24, 2025

I’m what you might call an “enthusiastic walker.” I love a good true crime podcast, a shady park path, and the feeling of getting my steps in. But when that signature Midwest summer humidity rolls in, the kind you can wear like a blanket, my enthusiastic walk quickly turns into a slow, meandering shuffle. By mid-July, it’s less of a walk and more of a crawl back to the sweet relief of air conditioning.

Sound familiar?

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking, “There has to be a better way to work out in the summer, right?” you are not alone. You’re in the right place.

Welcome to the Summer Fitness Rut

Summer should be a season of energy and fun, but it often becomes a motivation-killer for our fitness routines. We start May with the best intentions, but we’re fighting an uphill battle against the enemies of summer fitness:

  • The Oppressive Heat: It saps your energy, spikes your heart rate, and makes even a simple workout feel like a monumental effort.
  • The High-Impact Grind: Pounding the hot, hard pavement can be brutal on your knees, hips, and ankles.
  • The Sheer Boredom: Let’s face it, the same four walls of the gym can feel extra confining when the sun is shining, but exercising outside feels like a chore.

It’s a common cycle that often ends with our fitness goals melting away like an ice cream cone on the asphalt. But what if you could get a killer workout that left you feeling refreshed, strong, and completely energized instead of drained?

The Solution: A Liquid Gym Where Fun is a Feature

The ultimate summer fitness hack isn’t a new gadget or an expensive class, it’s waiting right here at the pool. A water workout isn’t just a way to escape the heat; it’s a scientifically superior way to exercise. Here’s why:

  1. Built-in Air Conditioning: This is the glorious, obvious perk. The water whisks away heat from your body, keeping your core temperature down. This allows you to work out more comfortably, often for longer and with more intensity, than you ever could on land.
  2. The Resistance Revolution: Water is nearly 800 times denser than air. That means every single movement—every kick, push, and pull, is a form of resistance training for your entire body. You’re building strength and toning muscle with every motion, without ever having to pick up a weight.
  3. Your Joints Will Thank You (Seriously): This is the magic of buoyancy. The water supports up to 90% of your body weight, which means there is almost zero impact on your joints. It’s the perfect environment for people of all fitness levels, especially those with joint pain, arthritis, or injuries, or anyone simply looking to protect their body from wear and tear.
  4. It’s More Than Just Boring Laps: The myth that a pool workout is just swimming back and forth in silence is just that—a myth. The modern pool is a dynamic, energetic fitness center.

How to Win the Summer Screen Time Battle

Win the summer screen time battle
June 17, 2025

Just this past weekend, we were heading to a friend’s BBQ. The sun was shining, the cooler was packed, and the smell of summer was in the air. As we were walking out the door, my seven-year-old daughter asked, with the world-weary sigh only a kid can truly perfect, “Can I bring my Nintendo Switch?”

When I said no, that this was a party to play with friends, you would have thought I’d asked her to solve a complex algebraic equation. The complaint was immediate. The disappointment was palpable.

And I get it. We all get it. We’re not anti-tech, but we are pro-balance. In the summer standoff between the couch and the sunshine, the glowing screen often has an unfair advantage. It’s expertly designed to be more engaging than almost anything else. So how do we compete?

This isn’t about shaming or guilting. This is about sharing a powerful, practical, and ridiculously fun secret weapon in the fight for a balanced summer—one that doesn’t require nagging, bargaining, or feeling like the fun police.

More Than Just Getting Them Off the Couch

Let’s be clear: the goal isn’t just to make our kids bored outside instead of bored inside. It’s about what they gain when they unplug. It’s the feel of grass between their toes, the satisfaction of building a lopsided fort, and the confidence they find learning what their own bodies can do. It’s about experiencing the unscripted, unpredictable, and often messy joy of the real world.

The Ultimate Antidote: Why Water Wins, Hands Down

Ready for the secret weapon? It’s the pool. It’s the lake. It’s water. It is the ultimate Digital Detox Zone, and here’s why it works so flawlessly:

  1. Total Sensory Immersion: A screen engages two senses. Water engages them all. It’s the shock of cold on a hot day, the sound of a perfectly executed cannonball, the scent of sunscreen, the sparkle of light on the surface, and the unique feeling of weightlessness. It pulls a child’s entire body and brain into the present moment in a way a screen simply cannot replicate.
  2. It’s Physically Impossible to Multitask: This is the beautiful, simple truth. You cannot scroll and swim. You can’t watch a video while practicing your back float. The water creates a natural, effortless boundary. It forces a true break from the digital world for kids and parents alike, creating a space for genuine connection and play.
  3. It Builds “Embodied” Confidence: There’s a hollow victory in beating a video game level. Then there’s the deep, lasting confidence that comes from mastering a real-world physical skill. Think about the pride on their face when they finally get the courage to jump off the side, swim to the bottom to retrieve a toy, or master a new stroke. That’s an “I did it!” feeling they carry with them long after they dry off.
  4. It’s a Blank Canvas for Imagination: A pool isn’t just a pool. In the mind of a child, it’s a mysterious ocean teeming with rare fish. It’s a treacherous pirate lagoon where you have to find treasure. It’s the grand stage for the Mermaid Olympics. Water encourages creative, unscripted, imaginative play that is vital for development and something screens often replace.

Your Battle Plan: Swapping Screen Time for Splash Time

Okay, so we know water is the answer. But how do you make it a regular part of your summer routine? The key is structure—a scheduled, recurring reason to get out of the house and into the pool.

  • Swim Lessons: This is your weekly appointment with screen-free fun. It’s a non-negotiable commitment where your child is engaged, learning a vital life skill, and burning off that boundless summer energy.
  • Private Pool Rentals: Think of this as a “special event” to break up the monotony. Host a screen-free birthday party or a “just because” friends-day-out where the only thing they’ll be plugged into is the fun.
  • Family Swim & Aqua-Fit: Model the behavior! Make a family date to come swim together. It’s a healthy habit that gets everyone moving and connecting in a positive way.

It’s Not About Winning a Battle, It’s About Winning Summer

The goal isn’t to eliminate screens forever. It’s about enriching your child’s summer with vibrant, real-world experiences that create lasting skills and even better memories. You’re not just taking away a tablet; you’re giving your child the gift of physical confidence, imaginative joy, and a deeper connection to the world around them.
