The Athlete’s Guide to In-Water Rehab and Conditioning

When you think of athletic conditioning, you probably picture heavy turf sleds, squat racks, and endless miles on the track. But what if the ultimate training tool wasn’t on the turf at all? What if it was the pool?
Take your performance and recovery to the next level with our All Sports In-Water Conditioning & Rehab class at The Swim Advantage in Joliet. Whether you swing a bat, run marathons, play soccer, or swim competitively, water training is the smartest way to build strength, boost endurance, and accelerate your recovery without the high impact of traditional training.
Here is why every athlete should be incorporating the pool into their training regimen:
The Science of Water Resistance and Buoyancy
The secret to in-water conditioning comes down to two unique factors you simply cannot replicate in a standard weight room:
- 360-Degree Resistance: Water is roughly 800 times denser than air. That means it provides omnidirectional resistance. Every single move you make—forward, backward, or side-to-side—is working against the water. This builds balanced, functional muscle strength across your entire body without having to stack plates on a barbell.
- Zero-Impact Buoyancy: While you are pushing against the water, the water is also supporting your body weight. This incredible buoyancy takes the harsh, repetitive stress off your joints, ligaments, and tendons, allowing you to train harder and longer without the usual wear and tear.
The Ultimate Rehab Environment
Getting back in the game is incredibly frustrating when land-based exercises hurt. If you are an athlete recovering from an injury or dealing with chronic joint pain, the pool is your safest environment.
Using the natural support of the water, our conditioning class allows you to safely move through your full range of motion, increase blood flow to injured areas, and rebuild foundational strength without the risk of reinjury. You get to maintain your cardiovascular fitness and rebuild muscle while actively protecting your joints.
Cross-Train & Push Your Limits (Yes, Even Baseball Players!)
You don’t have to be injured to benefit from aquatic training. For healthy athletes looking for a competitive edge and a way to avoid burnout, the pool offers an unmatched cross-training opportunity.
Practicing sport-specific movements against water resistance translates directly to explosive power and speed on land. A baseball or softball player practicing rotational core work against the water will build a more powerful, stable swing. A track star doing high-knee sprints in the deep end builds immense hip-flexor strength and cardiovascular endurance without compounding the impact on their knees and shins.
What to Expect in Class
Our All Sports In-Water Conditioning & Rehab class is a highly dynamic session. Participants engage in sport-specific movements, mobility work, and targeted conditioning exercises that enhance performance while reducing stress on the body.
The best part? You do not need to be a skilled swimmer to take this class! This session is entirely focused on movement, resistance, and conditioning, not swimming perfect freestyle laps. Whether you are returning from injury, cross-training, or just looking for a smarter way to push your limits, this class delivers results in a safe and highly effective environment.
Ready to Level Up Your Game?
To perform at your peak, you have to treat your body right. Stop beating up your joints on the pavement and step into the pool.
Classes are currently running Mondays and Fridays from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM at our new Joliet location inside The FLEX.
